ABOUT
This site was originally created just for shits and giggles. I used to write for Fangoria Magazine, Fangoria.com, Dread Central, and, Shock 'Til You Drop. But, as my screenwriting career began to evolve, I found I had less time I could dedicate to entertainment journalism, so I walked away to focus all my efforts on screenwriting.
The decision was the correct one, and things are moving in the right direction for me.
However, I do miss waxing about film in a journalistic form, so I decided to start blogging as daily writing warm-ups. But, I have discovered there is a need for something more in the (dying) internet film blogger market.
FILM TALK. NOTHING ELSE.
As you may have heard, we had an election recently, and it would appear many film websites have decided to turn their venues into political propaganda pulpits, their pages littered with film "reviews" and "retrospectives" which somehow always connect back to a singular political slant. Propaganda disguised as film comment.
Their contributor's social media feeds have become a stream of hate and hypocrisy. It's unfortunate. I know a lot of them, and they are smart, sharp people, but have gone so far down the rabbit hole they clearly have no idea how to crawl back to the light of objectivity. And, I don't think people go to a film comment website for political bullshit. In fact, they are probably going to a film website to escape it.
The film community is a diverse one. Having met so many film fans at conventions and gatherings over the years, I know their political and personal beliefs are all over the map. Why any film site would want to target, and ostracize, any reader in a time when film sites are shutting their doors, is beyond me. That will not happen here. Unless the film is political in its nature (i.e. THE IDES OF MARCH), there will be no political agenda on display here. NONE. ALL ARE WELCOME. Our contributor's social media feeds will be the same.
We generate no revenue. Other than our host, Wix, promoting their services (small price to pay for their rather impressive free tools) there will be no ads, and this site was not created with the intention of eventually getting to that point. As I have noted here a couple times, film sites are dying, and some have decided to run toward their eventual graves rather than walk. Unfortunate.
We're still in the beta phase here, kicking the tires, and the look and design will change the more we learn about Wix's tools and features. My personal website is still up and running, but that will eventually serve an entirely different purpose related only to my screenwriting.
So, that's the spiel, and the promise. Film Talk. Nothing Else. I hope you enjoy what we're trying to do here. If you don't that's cool too. Thanks for giving it a shot.
Best,
Erik W. Van Der Wolf
